Neurodivergent-Friendly Travel
Autism diagnosis rates and the CAC-certified venue network have both grown fast, but almost nobody sells the missing link: a human who turns that certified infrastructure into a specific, sensory-safe itinerary a family can trust enough to actually book the trip.
Strong demand signal from real diagnosis growth and a fast-expanding CAC venue network, but this is a trust business: revenue scales only as fast as you can build a referral reputation among skeptical, research-heavy parents, so early growth is slow and manual.
CDC estimates roughly 1 in 36 U.S. 8-year-olds have autism spectrum disorder, up sharply from 1 in 150 in 2000, and IBCCES's Certified Autism Center program has certified hundreds of venues including Sesame Place (the first CAC theme park, 2018), Legoland Florida and Legoland California, Beaches Resorts, and full destinations like Mesa, Arizona. TSA Cares provides a free assistance program for travelers with disabilities and sensory needs at security checkpoints. Existing players like Autism Travel (IBCCES's own booking arm) and boutique operators like Spectrum Retreats prove the model works, but coverage is thin outside a handful of flagship destinations, leaving most of the country's autism families to plan alone or simply not travel.
Peaks around summer school break and winter holidays; softer in Jan-Feb and post-Labor Day.
Suits you if
- ✓You have lived experience as an autism parent, or a professional background in special education, OT, or ABA
- ✓You're comfortable with slow, trust-based sales cycles rather than instant transactions
- ✓You enjoy detailed logistics work: building minute-by-minute sensory itineraries and briefing documents
- ✓You can invest time building relationships with CAC-certified venues before revenue starts
Skip it if
- ✕You need fast, high-volume transactional revenue rather than a handful of high-touch bookings per month
- ✕You're not willing to get IBCCES-certified or otherwise establish credible expertise
- ✕You want to serve everyone rather than build deep specialization in one underserved niche
- ✕You can't tolerate the emotional weight of talking through past bad travel experiences with anxious families
Skills: Core skills are travel logistics planning, active listening with anxious/protective parents, and enough working knowledge of sensory processing and autism accommodations to translate a family's specific triggers into concrete venue and scheduling choices. Sales and content marketing (parent-community trust-building) matter more than any technical skill.
